A nail biter and a draw in Saturday afternoon Rugby League

Perfect weather and a good turnout from supporters yesterday afternoon saw the closest round of Rugby League since its introduction to the Maltese Islands.

Justin Galea scored a try at the final whistle to give Gozo a hard-earned 16-all draw against newcomers Team Pit RL and in the latter game, a last minute Matthew Booth try kept Malta Origin undefeated this season following a 32-30 win over Eagles RL.

London Broncos help Malta launch squad for Euro Championship C

Malta Rugby League national team coach Anthony Micallef launched his team’s upcoming summer internationals campaign today together with members of the national team and Super League club London Broncos.

London Broncos back-rower Jonathan Wallace joined recently appointed Broncos head coach and former Malta coach Joey Grima along with Malta international Sam Keep and Malta vice-captain Clifford Debattista who both flew over from Malta for the announcement.

Malta Origin edge out Stompers for MRL Super Cup

It wasn’t the prettiest of matches by any stretch of the imagination but Malta Origin RL did enough to edge out Stompers on Wednesday night and win the first silverware of the rugby league season, the MRL Super Cup.

Last year’s champions met last year’s cup winners in what is quickly becoming a grudge match in the local rugby league championship, with Stompers also the last team to win the MRL Championship before Malta Origin last season.

First silverware on the line tonight

Last year’s champions, Malta Origin RL, will meet last year’s cup winners, Stompers RL, in the second round of the MRL Championship tonight at the Melita ground, Pembroke.

The round two encounter doubles as the MRL Super Cup, played between the previous season’s champions and cup winners. Thirdly, the match is a rematch of the 2013 Championship Grand Final that Malta Origin won 46-10 on the back of a Gareth Barron inspired hat-trick.

Police continue unbeaten run against Malta XIII

The touring West Yorkshire Police Rugby League extended its winning streak abroad to 11 years as they took on the Malta XIII on Friday night at the Melita ground.

After touring Australia, Jamaica, Latvia, Serbia and the Czech Republic, the Police team’s last loss dates back to 2003 when they were beaten in the south of France.

Malta XIII named for Police tour match

Eleven players from the reigning Maltese premiers have been named in the Malta XIII team for this Friday night’s friendly match against the touring West Yorkshire Police.

The team is all Maltese based and all five Maltese championship clubs are represented, but Malta Origin RL, including recent Serbian acquisitions Stefan Gajic and Aleksandar Markovic, have eleven representatives.
