Maltese Exiles strengthen team for Unofficial World Cup |
|
Maltese Exiles and Malta national team captain Chris Parker says the Maltese Exiles team will be stronger than their first outing when they take the field in September’s Unofficial World Cup at Weetwood Fields in Leeds.
The Exiles have been drawn in Group B and will face GB Teachers and the FIJI UK.
After the Exiles' 32-14 victory over Leeds Akkies in April, Parker confirms Malta international Shaun Gilmour will resume the captaincy he took up in the Exiles debut and that the Exiles would feature some new players before conceding that Group B was seemingly the group of death.
“Shaun Gilmour will assume captaincy and we are hoping Jonathan Wallace from London Broncos may be available for the tournament along with a couple of new faces” said Parker.
New faces in the Exiles lineup could include Great Britain Pioneers hooker Louis Singleton who’s grandfather was born in Senglea.
“Louis got in touch with us recently and could be a handy addition but it’s great to see the Maltese Exiles concept picking up speed continually” said Parker.
“We’re in a tough group. It goes without saying that the Fijians would be up there as one of the favourites for the tournament. And the GB Teachers team is a similar concept to ours, but made up of school teachers. Both matches should be a good test and a good preparation for the Malta team’s international against Denmark on September 29” Unofficial World Cup - Sponsored by Loverugbyleague.com Saturday 9 September, Weetwood Fields, Leeds, England Maltese Exiles Fixtures V GB Teachers, 1.50pm V FIJI UK, 3.10pm Finals, 4pm and 4.40pm Final, 5.10pm 2012-07-26, 15:18 |
