South victorious in opening domestic Championship round

The South prevailed against the North in match day 1 of the Malta Rugby League Championship at St Martins College.

The North set the scene for a fiery encounter when Kristin Baldacchino levelled Mark Seychell in the opening seconds of the match. From the ensuing play, back rower Daryl Psaila ran the length of the field to open the scoring.

It was the end to end rugby league before Psaila laid down the foundations with a brace of tries to complete a hat-trick within the quarter hour.

It was the beginning of an eight-try rout of the Northerners either side of half time, not excluding a hat-trick of tries to Mark Seychell.

At 40-8 with a quarter of the match remaining, the North were staring down the barrel towards a heavy defeat but repeat sets on their opposition line saw 17-year-old Jonathan Bonnici cross in the left corner of the field.

Muscat, Vella and Baldacchino complimented Bonnici's try in a mini-revival that saw four players share in six unananswered tries as the Northerners brought the score to 40 to 32.

Malta Knights international Daryl Psaila for the South and Chris Sammut for the North were ever present on the field in each of their vocal and physical abilities with the former laying the platform for a brace of tries by Graham Attard.

Not before Baldacchino and Sammut crossed for the North, Attard jotted over for another try on full time for a personal haul of five with his last breaking the half-century in a solid attacking performance.

The Northerners played without their Malta Knights skipper Daniel Grima who is abroad and likewise, the South was missing the likes of centre Mark Cortis, currently out with injury.

Great report and pictures are good, but I feel Malta will not gain credibility until they get better looking referees!
